Prism — Industrial AR Maintenance Assistant

A hands-free AR maintenance assistant that overlays step-by-step instructions, 3D part callouts and live sensor data onto industrial equipment through a transparent headset.

Challenge

Field technicians relied on paper manuals and tribal knowledge for complex maintenance. Errors were costly, and onboarding new technicians took months.

Objectives

  • Deliver context-aware guidance hands-free
  • Anchor instructions to the real machine in 3D
  • Pull live sensor data into the technician's view
  • Work across multiple headset platforms

Technical Approach

Equipment CAD was converted into lightweight AR anchors with spatial tracking through OpenXR. The procedure engine matches the technician's current step to detected part markers and projects callouts, warnings and live telemetry into the headset. A backend syncs session state so remote experts can annotate the same view.

Development

  • OpenXR spatial tracking and anchor system
  • Procedure-to-part matching engine
  • Live sensor data bridge over MQTT
  • Remote expert annotation and co-viewing
  • Multi-headset delivery (Quest, HoloLens, phone AR)
  • Offline-capable procedure caching
